Why I left the finance industry?
Some of the items highlighted by individuals leaving the industry included a lack of recognition and caring from leaders, a lack of alignment between the work and their own values, an inability to achieve their career goals, boringness of work, and a feeling of investing more in the organization than the organization ...
While many factors contribute to or cause stress, certain particularities of the finance sector have a stronger impact on employee well-being: Feeling under a lot of pressure and in competition with colleagues. Being overloaded with tasks and working long hours without much sleep.

Other common career transitions out of banking include entering the tech sector, the volunteer or NGO sector, starting an independent business/becoming an entrepreneur, becoming a personal financial advisor or stockbroker/trader.
The finance industry is infamous for struggling to create a positive work/life balance because of its long hours and intensely competitive nature.
- Most stressful job in finance : Investment Banker (M&A or capital markets professional) ...
- Second most stressful job in finance : Trader. ...
- Third most stressful job in finance : Risk management & Compliance.
The reasons that most people struggle financially will vary on the individual case but can include a lack of financial literacy, a scarcity mindset, self-esteem issues leading to overspending, and unavoidable high costs of living.
It is no secret that investment banking entails long hours due to the deal-oriented nature of the job. Indeed, averaging 80-hour work weeks is not unheard of.
In a recent study conducted by Avalara, it was discovered that 84% of Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) in the United States and the United Kingdom are currently grappling with a notable scarcity of skilled professionals in their accounting and finance departments.
Starting a new career in the finance or investment industry at the age of 40 is entirely feasible, especially if you are committed to learning and building the necessary skills. While you may not have prior experience in the industry, your life and work experience can be valuable assets.

Is finance a happy career?
Financial careers often involve high barriers to entry, stiff competition among applicants, and a lot of stress. Still, these jobs offer numerous perks, including a challenging work environment, interaction with highly motivated and intelligent colleagues, opportunities for advancement, and excellent pay.
- Stress: Some finance professionals find that their roles or industries feature stressful work environments. ...
- Long hours: Employees in the financial sector might also work overtime or unusual business hours, such as evenings and weekends.
Finance degree jobs can provide relatively high pay, stability, opportunities for advancement and consistent demand projections. Careers in finance may also offer flexibility for employees by allowing them to work remotely or in hybrid environments.
Generally speaking, people consider accounting majors to be more difficult to study and pass than finance majors. And there are a few different reasons for this. The content of accounting majors is, on average, much more technical than for finance majors, and this can make it more difficult.
Chief financial officers (CFO) oversee business budgeting, cost-related decision-making, and financial teams. The CFO role is one of the highest paying finance jobs because it requires financial leadership, experience, and an extensive network.
Jobs within the financial industry, such as accounting, consulting, and corporate finance are some of the highest-paying jobs. In the financial services industry, there are some areas that pay significantly more than others, such as investment banking, private equity, and hedge funds.
In return for a fee the financier plays the role of pooling the money from those who have it and distributing it to those who need it. Since they are at the center of the flow of money to consumers, governments and businesses, financiers control the lifeblood of the economy.
Statistics vary, but between 55 percent to 63 percent of Americans are likely living paycheck to paycheck.
Indeed, most U.S. adults (76%) feel at least some level of anxiety about their personal finances, according to a November 2023 survey by Sleepfoundation.org. For many, this means worse sleep: 77% say they lose sleep over money worries at least some of the time.
Salaries in the finance industry
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statics (BLS), careers in finance pay a median salary of $76,850 — 66% higher than the median salary for all occupations in the nation ($46,310).
Do finance jobs pay a lot?
As of Feb 1, 2024, the average annual pay for the Finance jobs category in California is $86,978 a year. Just in case you need a simple salary calculator, that works out to be approximately $41.82 an hour. This is the equivalent of $1,672/week or $7,248/month.
- Management Consulting (40-80 Hours Per Week)
- Single Manager Hedge Fund (50-70 Hours Per Week)
- Growth Equity (40-60 Hours Per Week)
- Venture Capital (40-60 Hours Per Week)
- Sales and Trading (40-60 Hours Per Week)
- Corporate Finance / Banking (40-60 Hours Per Week)
A lack of diversity seems apparent. The accounting major is perceived as too specialized. The cost of education is too high. Enrollments in higher education are declining.
Higher starting salaries with other majors was the top reason why non-accounting majors who had considered the field decided against it, according to a survey of nearly 500 students this spring by the Center for Audit Quality, an industry group.
The average age of a CPA in the US is 52-53 years old. Given that many accounting firms mandate a retirement age of 65 or 66, this suggests most CPAs are set to retire within the next decade or two. This gap is exacerbated by a growing demand for accounting and finance professionals.
