What is the minimum credit score required?
Most lenders require a minimum credit score of 620 to buy a house with a conventional mortgage. Other types of mortgages have different credit score requirements: FHA home loans typically require a credit score of at least 500 if you put 10% down or 580 if you put 3.5% down.
Therefore, most financial professionals generally accept that 300 is the lowest credit score a consumer can have. A lower credit score tells a lender there's a higher likelihood that an applicant might repay a credit obligation severely late or default on the debt entirely.
However, you'd probably want to have a credit score above 660 to apply for a credit card. Aside from your credit score, credit card issuers might look at your employment, your debt mix, and other factors (what they look at will depend on the credit card issuer, and the credit card you are applying for).
A credit score of about 700+ will likely qualify you for just about any credit card, including those with cash back rewards, lower annual percentage rates (APRs) and more. However, there are plenty of cards you can get with a score lower than this (more on that later).
APR range | Minimum credit score requirement | |
---|---|---|
Best Egg | 8.99%-35.99% | 600 |
LightStream | 7.99% to 25.49%* with Autopay | 695 |
Upgrade | 8.49%-35.99% | 600 |
SoFi | 8.99%-29.99% | 680 |
In the U.S., the average credit score is 716, per Experian's latest data from the second quarter of 2023. And when you break down the average credit score by age, the typical American is hovering near or above that score.

The minimum credit score needed for most mortgages is typically around 620. However, government-backed mortgages like Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans typically have lower credit requirements than conventional fixed-rate loans and adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs).
Your credit score is a major factor in whether you'll be approved for a car loan. Some lenders use specialized credit scores, such as a FICO Auto Score. In general, you'll need at least prime credit, meaning a credit score of 661 or up, to get a loan at a good interest rate.
Which card is easiest to get approved for?
The Discover it® Secured Credit Card is our top pick for easiest credit card to get because it's geared toward those with limited/poor credit. It offers great rewards and charges a $0 annual fee. Plus, Discover will conduct monthly account reviews after seven months to see if you qualify to get your deposit refunded.
Why it's one of the hardest credit cards to get: The hardest credit card to get is the American Express Centurion Card. Known simply as the “Black Card,” you need an invitation to get Amex Centurion. And only the super rich and famous can expect to get the call, as...
Capital One's credit cards include some of the best-known products on the market, thanks to the company's celebrity spokespeople and its ubiquitous catchphrase, "What's in your wallet?" But the issuer's cards are more than hype — they include generous rewards cards as well as excellent products for business owners, ...
You need at least $10,500 in annual income to get a personal loan, in most cases. Minimum income requirements vary by lender, ranging from $10,500 to $100,000+, and a lender will request documents such as W-2 forms, bank statements, or pay stubs to verify that you have enough income or assets to afford the loan.
Loan Amount | Loan Term (Years) | Estimated Fixed Monthly Payment* |
---|---|---|
$25,000 | 3 | $771.81 |
$25,000 | 5 | $518.84 |
$30,000 | 3 | $926.18 |
$30,000 | 5 | $622.61 |
The monthly payment on a $30,000 loan ranges from $410 to $3,014, depending on the APR and how long the loan lasts. For example, if you take out a $30,000 loan for one year with an APR of 36%, your monthly payment will be $3,014.
It's a good idea to pay off your credit card balance in full whenever you're able. Carrying a monthly credit card balance can cost you in interest and increase your credit utilization rate, which is one factor used to calculate your credit scores.
Your credit score may go up for several reasons, and they all have to do with changes to the information on your credit report. Common reasons for a score increase include: a reduction in credit card debt, the removal of old negative marks from your credit report and on-time payments being added to your report.
Credit score required: 620
Conventional loans are the most common type of mortgage, accounting for about 70% of the market. They usually require a 620 credit score, though some lenders will consider applicants with scores as low as 580.
The average FICO® Score☉ in the United States was 715 in 2023, according to Experian data, increasing by one point from its 714 average in the third quarter (Q3) of 2022. It marks the 10th consecutive year that average FICO® Scores in the U.S. haven't decreased on an annual basis.
Does income affect credit score?
While income doesn't have a direct impact on your credit score, it can have an indirect impact since you need to have sufficient income to pay your bills. And if you don't make enough money to cover your bills, you can rack up debt or miss payments, which can negatively impact your credit score.
670 to 739: Good
Lenders generally view those with credit scores of 670 and up as acceptable or lower-risk borrowers.
For most loan types, the credit score needed to buy a house is at least 620.
- Shop your insurances: It's a good idea to regularly shop for better insurance rates; you can often find identical auto and home coverage for less. ...
- Snag credit card bonuses: The market for rewards credit cards is sizzling, with generous sign-up bonuses and rewards for consumers who can qualify.
In case of a $300,000 home, that translates to a down payment of $9,000, which is the lowest possible unless you qualify for a zero-down-payment VA or USDA loan. A 620 credit score is typically required, but lenders might have different rules.
