What is the history of insurance when why how did it begin?
The first known insurance contract dates from Genoa in 1347, and in the next century maritime insurance developed widely and premiums were intuitively varied with risks. These new insurance contracts allowed insurance to be separated from investment, a separation of roles that first proved useful in marine insurance.
In India, insurance has a deep-rooted history. It finds mention in the writings of Manu (Manusmrithi), Yagnavalkya (Dharmasastra) and Kautilya (Arthasastra). The writings talk in terms of pooling of resources that could be re-distributed in times of calamities such as fire, floods, epidemics and famine.
Insurance is a financial safety net, helping you and your loved ones recover after something bad happens — such as a fire, theft, lawsuit or car accident. When you purchase insurance, you'll receive an insurance policy, which is a legal contract between you and your insurance provider.
The sale of life insurance in the U.S. began in the 1760s. The Presbyterian Synods in Philadelphia and New York City created the Corporation for Relief of Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers in 1759; Episcopalian priests organized a similar fund in 1769.
The first insurance company in the United States underwrote fire insurance and was formed in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1735.
The literal meaning of insurance would be an assurance against unforeseen and unfortunate loss. This means, that if you encounter a less than normal event in your normal course of life, and happen to incur a financial loss because of it, you can be compensated.
Life insurance began in the U.S. in the 1700s. In Pennsylvania, a group of officials of the Presbyterian faith created a fund to protect Presbyterian ministers and their families. It was called the Corporation for Relief of Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers.
Insurance in some form is as old as historical society. So-called bottomry contracts were known to merchants of Babylon as early as 4000–3000 bce. Bottomry was also practiced by the Hindus in 600 bce and was well understood in ancient Greece as early as the 4th century bce.
While there were earlier experiments, sickness coverage in the US effectively dates from 1890. The first employer-sponsored group disability policy was issued in 1911, but this plan's primary purpose was replacing wages lost because the worker was unable to work, not medical expenses.
Solomon Huebner's designation as the “father of insurance education” is undisputed. He taught the first course ever given in insurance, established the insurance department — and became the architect of the modern financial services industry.
Where did health insurance originate?
What is widely considered the first employer-sponsored plan started with a group of teachers in Dallas. The teachers joined together to create a program where they would agree to pay, what would now be considered an insurance premium, to Baylor University Hospital for future medical services.
Insurance coverage can be defined as a contract in the form of a financial protection policy. This policy covers the monetary risks of an individual due to unpredictable contingencies. The insured is the policyholder whereas the insurer is the insurance-providing company/the insurance carrier/the underwriter.

Predating private health insurance were efforts at government-sponsored coverage for workplace injury and a tradition of industrial sickness funds. The Great Depression led hospitals and then physicians to implement forms of insurance as means to ensure payment for services.
Insurance is a mechanism of risk transfer and sharing by pooling of risks and funds among a group of individuals who are exposed to similar kinds of risks for the benefit of those who suffer loss on account of the risk.
Life insurance was invented by the ancient Romans when Roman soldiers created “burial clubs” as a way to pay for the religious rites and burial expenses of their fellow soldiers who died in battle.
The concept of insurance developed from the need to minimize the adverse effects of risk associated with the probability of financial loss. The function of insurance is to safeguard against financial loss by having the losses of few paid by the contributions of many who are exposed to the same risk.

Explain the principle of Insurable Interests.
An insurance premium is the amount of money an individual or business pays for an insurance policy. Insurance premiums are paid for policies that cover healthcare, auto, home, and life insurance. Once earned, the premium is income for the insurance company.
1752 The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire, the oldest insurance carrier in continuous operation in the United States, was established.
How do insurance companies make money?
Insurance companies make money primarily from premium income, but they also invest the accumulated premiums in financial instruments to generate investment income. They also earn revenue from sources such as fees for policy services and commissions from partnering with agents and brokers.
