How did Bill Gates start out?
Gates wrote his first software program at the age of 13. In high school he helped form a group of programmers who computerized their school's payroll system and founded Traf-O-Data, a company that sold traffic-counting systems to local governments.
Bill Gates turned his passion for computers into a job his senior year in high school coding for the electrical grid at a power plant in Washington state. He later dropped out of Harvard to launch software firm Microsoft with his high school friend Paul Allen in 1975 and took it public in 1986.
Bill Gates and Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft in 1979. The idea started half a decade earlier, though, when Paul Allen saw the Altair 8800, the first microcomputer, on the cover of Popular Electronics. At the time, Allen and Gates were students at Harvard.
Gates is known for his visionary leadership style. He encouraged innovation within Microsoft, fostering a culture that emphasized pushing the boundaries of technology. His hands-on approach and unwavering commitment to his vision inspired his team to achieve remarkable feats.
After growing up in an affluent family in Seattle, Gates attended Harvard University, where he met his future business partner, Paul Allen. The pair dropped out of college and founded Microsoft in 1975, with Gates serving as the company's CEO.
If Gates had held onto his 45% initial stake in Microsoft after the company's 1986 IPO, he would be a trillionaire today. But hindsight is always 20/20, and back in 1987, when Microsoft's star was still on the rise, Gates became the world's youngest self-made billionaire at age 32 — which was not too shabby, either.
Bill Gates
Bill co-founded Microsoft Corporation in 1975 with Paul Allen and led the company to become the worldwide leader in business and personal software and services. In 2008, Bill transitioned to focus full-time on the foundation's work.
Bill Gates was born into a wealthy family who paid for a very expensive private education for him. When he founded Microsoft, his parents gave him the seed money to get the business going. His mother, who was socially connected, introduced him to the people that allowed him to sign his contract with IBM for MS-DOS.
In fact, confidence was key in transforming Gates from a 20-year-old college kid with an interest in computers to co-founder of a company that is now one of the world's largest.
Early Life
Known as Trey to his family, Bill was a bright and competitive child who loved math and reading. At age 8, he began reading encyclopedias for fun. But in grade school, he was bored. His parents decided to send him to Lakeside, a private middle and high school.
Did Bill Gates grow up rich or poor?
Early Life. Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington to William and Mary Gates. He has an elder sister, Kristianne, and a younger sister, Libby. Gates grew up upper-middle class, his father working as an attorney and his mother as a schoolteacher.
Together with Paul Allen, Bill Gates pioneered the development of Micro-Soft in 1975 (the hyphen was later removed). Like Allen, Gates had first been introduced to the computer age by a teletype machine installed at the Lakeside School in Seattle with funds raised by mothers through rummage sales.
At age 26, Gates became a millionaire and in 1987, just months before his 31st birthday, he became a billionaire. As personal computers became increasingly popular in the 90s, Microsoft reinforced its position as a dominant tool with the release of Microsoft Office.
America applauded the Gates when they announced that they would give only $10 million because the $10 million was such a small amount. The wealthy parents were wildly praised by the grateful nation for leaving only such a small amount to their children while they could have left billions each.
Bill Gates
First job: Bill Gates worked as a computer programmer for TRW during his senior year in high school at the age of 15.
Bill Sr. earned his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Washington, following three years of U.S. Army service in World War II. A founding partner at Preston Gates & Ellis, Bill Sr. served as president of both the Seattle/King County Bar Association and the Washington State Bar Association.

Clemente Del Vecchio
Delfin also owns shares in other large companies, including multiple banks. Clemente was at one time the world's youngest billionaire (at the age of 18), but he has since aged out of that title, which is now held by Livia Voigt.
Bill Gates became the world's youngest self-made billionaire in 1987 after growing excitement for the software industry drove Microsoft's stock higher. The value in his shares surpassed $1 billion by the time he was 31, making him the youngest billionaire ever at the time.
The rise of Bill Gates is no different in terms of debating the born/became conundrum. No one can say for sure if he was born to be a leader, but his life's work shows a pattern of actions that illustrate how he became a legend among historical business leaders.
Did Bill Gates get money from his parents?
Gates did not start Microsoft with a loan from his parents, it was entirely bootstrapped financially. Paul Allen and Gates had saved up a small amount of money from contract work. Together they provided all of Microsoft's seed capital.
In July 2022, Gates said he planned to give “virtually all” of his wealth to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, according to a post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. His message came as the foundation revealed a new plan to increase yearly spending “from nearly $6 billion to $9 billion annually by 2026.”
Bill Gates was making the first big deals of his life.
In 1980, IBM needed an operating system for their upcoming computer, and contracted Microsoft to create it.
In 1975, Gates made the decision to drop out of Harvard and focus on building Microsoft. He and Allen moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they set up their first office and began working on their first software product, Altair BASIC.
