  1. Verstappen edges Leclerc to take pole

Andrew BensonBBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Max Verstappen won a titanic fight for pole at the Dutch Grand Prix, shading Charles Leclerc by just 0.021 seconds.

The Red Bull driver looked to be in formidable form early in qualifying but Leclerc went faster on the first runs in the final session in his Ferrari.

Leclerc improved on his final run, only for Verstappen to pip him, sending the orange-clad capacity crowd at his home race into paroxysms of joy.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz snuck ahead of Mercedes Lewis Hamilton for third.

Max Verstappen gave the orange army plenty to cheer about today but will he still be smiling on Sunday? Or can Charles Leclerc in red spoil the Dutch party?

We'll be back tomorrow at 12:30 BST with all the build up to the Dutch Grand Prix.

Get some rest in. Hopefully this one will be a cracker.

    Catch you tomorrow!

  3. 'It just didn't really click today'

George Russell, who qualifies in P6 for tomorrow's Dutch Grand Prix, has been chatting to Sky Sports.

He's asked what he thought of his qualifying performance. "Not great to be honest," says the Mercedes man.

"The car has been feeling great all weekend and I had a really strong feeling after FP3.

"But it just didn't really click for me and I don't really know why. Ultimately it was a a lack of performance in Q2 that cost me in Q3 because we had to take those second set of tyres, so I only had the one set available in Q3 and obviously with the yellow flag, I couldn't get my lap in. A little bit frustrating."

Russell does see the positive side after qualifying: "I see no reason why we can't fight for a podium," he adds.

  4. Post update

Just before Max Verstappen raided Charles Leclerc's pole stash, I asked you to decide who was going to secure the Dutch front-row spot.

1,852 of you went with Leclerc, 1,139 opted for Verstappen.

Charles Leclerc's last victory at the Austrian Grand Prix in July saw him start beside polesitter Max Verstappen but eventually take the race win after a tense final 10 laps.

At that stage in the season. Leclerc cut Verstappen's championship lead to 38 points, to revive his hopes of lifting a maiden title.

With the Red Bull driver 93 points better off in September, it's going to take something monumental for the Ferrari man to get back into the fight now.

  6. Post update

Charles Leclerc, after he's finished lacing up his boot, tells Sky Sports he made a mistake into Turn 10. "I went very wide," says the Ferrari driver.

And how does he think he can beat home favourite Max Verstappen? "Well, easy way will be a great start," he says. "P1 into Turn 1."

  7. Fourth will have to do for Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton will line up alongside the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz on the second row but the Mercedes man will be mulling over what might have been. His lap looked good enough to at least muscle his way closer to Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen before Sergio Perez ended proceedings with his late mishap.

*I wrote this just before Toto Wolff spoke to Sky Sports.*

  8. Post update

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says Lewis Hamilton "was a tenth up" on both Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc before the yellow flag came out for Sergio Perez.

Game on again for the Silver Arrows?

Adam: How much luck does one man need? Will he ever win a championship without it? I'm not so sure.

Kayleigh: Really hope Charles can do something off the line tomorrow to give us a good-ish race.

  10. 'I think in the end we did a decent job'

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who starts in third place: "Yeah it was a clean lap with no mistakes, just missing that last half a tenth to beat Charles and Max who were on the limit out there. I think in the end we did a decent job.

"It is very tough out there especially with the heavier cars, the track is especially demanding on the tyres, we have a lot of overheating and degradation.

"I think tomorrow is going to be an interesting day, there is going to be a lot going even if it's a difficult track to overtake, there will still many options with strategies."

  11. 'Car was getting better and better"

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who will start second on the grid: "It was very very close. Max did a great lap in the end.

"Our car was getting better and better through qualifying. In the beginning I was pretty scared because Max was much, much quicker than those on used tyres. But in Q3, the car came a bit more together and I managed to do that lap which was close enough for P2. Tomorrow is the race and we will give it our all.

"We are much stronger here compared to last weekend, so that's good to see and for tomorrow, I think our race pace looks strong and hopefully it will be close with the Red Bull. We just need to do a great start."

  12. 'Today the car was enjoyable to drive'

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who finished P1 in his home race fora second year in a row: "Unbelievable. Especially after yesterday we had a difficultday but we worked really well overnight, the whole team turned it around andtoday we had a quick race car again but it was very close but the pole lap wasinsane.

"We changed a lot, yesterday was a bit rushed in FP2 to get the car together, but today the car was enjoyable to drive."

  13. Post update

What did the top three have to say? Let's take a look...

  14. Post update

Lando Norris and Alpha Tauri's Yuki Tsunoda need to take a trip to the stewards for that unsafe release at the start of qualifying.

  15. Post update

Horner adds that it looked like Charles Leclerc "was a sniff quicker" today, but a mistake for the Ferrari driver allowed Max Verstappen to snatch pole.

  16. Post update

The "mighty middle sector", as Red Bull boss Christian Horner called it, was the sweet spot for Max Verstappen's front row ambitions.

  17. Post update

Charles Leclerc looked gutted right after to qualifying. The crowd were almost silenced by the Ferrari's performance and the Monegasque driver's calm composure.

  18. Post update

Fourth pole position of the 2022 season for Max Verstappen and back-to-back Dutch Grand Prix front-row spots for the world champion.
