If you’re like me, you love stopping whenever you see an Amish roadside stand or going to a farmer’s market where they are selling their baked goods. I also really love collecting cookbooks, especially Amish and Mennonite cookbooks. Some of my favorites include Hope’s Table and Amish Friends Gatherings Cookbook.

Chocolate chip cookies are one of my favorite cookies to bake. These chocolate chip cookies are thick but have a soft and chewy middle. I have been working on recreating some these Amish chocolate chip cookies I had last time we were traveling.

Why Amish food?
Amish food is just so good! Whenever I was a kid, we would sometimes go on road trips to see extended family. We would always stop and purchase Amish specialties. I remember blue popcorn kernels being one, lots of canned jams and jellies, and fresh baked goods.
I feel like Amish food is simple but always delicious. Amish recipes always use real ingredients, are tasty, and family friendly.
What ingredients are needed for this recipe?
This recipe for Amish chocolate chip cookies uses easy, everyday ingredients. You will need:
- All purpose flour: Be sure to measure your flour correctly. I recommend using a butter knife to level off your flour.
- Corn starch: You’ll need two teaspoons for this recipe.
- Baking powder and baking soda: To give the cookies some rise.
- Salt: You’ll need just ¾ of a teaspoon of salt.
- Butter: You’ll need unsalted butter for this recipe.
- Vanilla: I recommend pure vanilla extract for baking.
- Brown sugar and white sugar: To sweeten the cookies.
- Eggs: You’ll need one large egg plus one egg yolk.
- Nutmeg: You’ll need just ¼ teaspoon, it will strengthen the flavor of the cookies.
- Chocolate chips: You can use milk or semi sweet.
How to make these cookies

In a large mixing bowl combine the cornstarch, salt and flour. Mix well with a large spoon. Next, add in the baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg, brown sugar, and white sugar. Mix well with a large spoon.
Add in the wet ingredients and mix well with a hand mixer.
Stir in the chocolate chips with a large spoon and then let the dough chill for at least 30 minutes, preferably an hour.
Measure out your dough into balls (about 2 tablespoons). Bake at 350 degrees for 11 to 13 minutes or until edges are golden.
Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for about 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
Recipe tips
- Be sure to chill your dough. If you skip chilling the dough, your cookies may turn out too flat.
- Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes after baking.
- Be sure to mix the dry ingredients first. This ensures that no one gets a big bite of salt or cornstarch in their cookie.
